[21.10.2026] Staff cuts hit young employees the hardest
Due to budget cuts for the years 2028 through 2030, local universities are expecting to make savings of at least 10 percent—particularly in the area of personnel. Experts warn that this will hit early-career researchers especially hard.
UPV Speaker Veronika Somoza told the APA: She fears a “brain drain”: “Depending on the extent of the cuts in this area, there is a risk of a massive exodus of an entire generation of top researchers.”
[03.07.2026] Best Poster Award for Dr. Fawzan S. Aurum
Dr. Fawzan Aurum was awarded the prize for best poster at the Euro Fed Lipid Conference on Food Lipids and Lipidomics for Health, Nutrition, and Sustainability, which took place in July at the University of Aveiro in Portugal.
His poster, titled “Phospholipidomics-based profiling of plasma lipid responses to flaxseed oil bolus supplementation after physical exercise", examined how our blood lipids respond to intense physical exertion and whether a natural compound in flaxseed oil can protect the body during this process. We all know that exercise is healthy, but it also subjects our cells to a state of stress. Dr. Aurum wanted to find out whether flaxseed oil, known for its valuable plant compounds, can protect our cells from this stress. Using modern laboratory techniques, he tracked subtle changes in blood lipids before and after exercise, thereby gaining a detailed understanding of how our bodies respond to physical activity and how our diet can support this response.
